3/9/2024 0 Comments Repeating heavy crossbow 5eComparatively, only fighter would ever reach this many attacks in 5e and not until 11th level. In bg3, this build can be up to 4 attacks at as low of a level as 8 with 5 levels in any martial and 3 levels in thief rogue. You need the crossbow expert feat in addition to the previously mentioned sharpshooter feat which we take in bg3, as crossbow expert is the only way to actually get the bonus action crossbow attacks in 5e. To be at the same point (minus the ability to benefit from the stats of a second weapon set, which is impossible) in 5e, you would need to in most cases keep your offhand free, only have a single hand crossbow equipped in your hands and nothing else, and would need to either be 5th or 8th level in a martial class, depending on your race for extra attack and 2 feats. You can also do this while still benefitting from a shield in your melee slot for an extra 2 AC and whatever else your shield gives you, and there are a handful of one handed melee weapons in the game which expand crit range globally and also apply to your crossbow's ranged attacks as well. I don't know who thought it would be a good idea to allow this to go through as it is, but it makes for some really broken interactions particularly for casters and ranged weapon users since the melee slots are generally more valuable stats wise since they have many more VR/legendary weapon options and also the shield slot.Īll you need for the crossbow build to function at near to 5e's peak capacity in bg3 is 4 levels in rogue, the sharpshooter feat, and 2 crossbows. In 5e you don't get to have two sets of weapons equipped and benefit from all of their passive effects even when they aren't in your hands. No full extra attack actions, no spells (aside from a single exceptional interaction with artificers 11th level feature, which is also very limited in spell selection). In 5e, Haste's additional action is very limited in scope, and can only really be used to either make a single weapon attack or use one of the less potent basic actions in combat. Another lesser and more common form is in the Haste spell, but this doesn't do what it does in bg3 either. Additional action economy in 5e is extremely rare, and only really comes in the form of fighter's action surge (an expendable resource), and the cavalier fighter's 18th level ability to use a reaction to opportunity attack once on each creature's turn in combat, which is notably a capstone ability of a subclass at near max level. There is no way of getting an additional bonus action in 5e. In 5e, thief rogue does not grant you an extra bonus action. ![]() ![]() These are notable exceptions, but like I said already the two weapon fighting feature doesn't apply to ranged weapons anyhow. ![]() Artificers could get around this with their repeating shot infusion, and thri-kreen in particular have enough hands to hold two hand crossbows, a shield, and still have a hand left over for reloading if they want to. Any weapon with the Ammunition property (which hand crossbows have) require a free hand to load the weapon when attacking. ![]() Even if two weapon fighting didn't specifically require melee weapons, the only way you would be able to dual wield hand crossbows was if you had extra hands to load them with, or some other method of circumventing the Ammunition property. In 5e you cannot use two weapon fighting with ranged weapons. In actual 5e hand crossbow builds are still immensely powerful even with all the additional drawbacks they have. The real issue is this whole thing is basically just a product of the compounding of Larian's homebrew design decisions.
